The Flame That Called Me Home: Why I Chose Candles, and Why I Keep Choosing Them

When I first started making candles in high school, I didn’t realize I was doing something sacred. I didn’t know I was reaching for something that would eventually help me find my way—not just as an artist or entrepreneur, but as a mother, a woman, and a spiritual being.

What I did know was this: I felt like an outsider. I was a New York-to-North Carolina transplant in a small Southern town, trying to find my rhythm in a place that didn’t quite feel like home. I didn’t always have the words for what I was feeling, but I found a sense of calm in creativity. And when I lit that first wick and watched the flame dance, something inside of me softened. I had found a kind of quiet that I didn’t know I needed. A sanctuary in the flicker.

That flame became my guide. It accompanied me through my studies, through motherhood, and through the beautiful chaos of building a life rooted in presence.

The Pain That Lit the Path

In 2007, I had my first son. Becoming a mother cracked me wide open. All the things I hadn’t processed—the ache of growing up with a hardworking single mother who couldn’t always be present, and a father whose distance was more than just physical—rose to the surface. I hadn’t realized how much I had been shaped by that absence until I became a mother myself.

I looked around and realized that the traditional path I was on—a biochemistry degree, a career in the sciences—wasn’t going to give me the thing I craved most: the ability to be present for my children. Not just physically, but emotionally, spiritually, daily. I wanted to say “yes” when they needed me. I didn’t want to miss the moments that mattered.

So in 2010, I made the choice to leave college and commit to building Sincerely Candle Company—something I had quietly started in 2009. And it wasn’t just a business. It was my yes. My answer to the pain I had known as a child. My chance to create a life that felt aligned, not only for me, but for my family.

From Burnout to Breakthrough

By the time my second son was born in 2015, life had expanded in beautiful—and demanding—ways. Our family was growing, we were preparing to purchase our first home, and I felt the pressure of needing to make it all work. I was still hustling in the service industry, homeschooling, and running a business that had grown beyond my ability to run it the way needed to in order to meet our financial needs.

That season stretched me. I clung to old ways of working while trying to meet new demands, and I often felt like I was burning at both ends. But in the middle of the overwhelm, I kept returning to the flame. And slowly, something sacred happened. What felt like a breakdown gave way to a breakthrough. I mastered the delicate balance between family and business.

New ideas were born. I realigned the business. I got clear again on my “why,” fire rekindled.

The Sacred Spark

Fire has always been a sacred tool—used in rituals, ceremonies, and spiritual gatherings across cultures and centuries. It's a purifier. A teacher. A messenger. Not everyone can build a fire in the woods or by the sea whenever they feel the call, but anyone can light a candle.

And that’s where Sincerely comes in.

These candles aren’t just for ambiance or fragrance—though they absolutely do bring beauty to a space. They’re for setting intentions, creating sacred space, and calling ourselves back to the present moment. They are gentle reminders to pause. To pray. To breathe. To connect with the divine.

When we light a candle, we awaken something ancient inside us. We create beauty. We set an atmosphere. We say, “This moment matters.”

This Is My Why

I make candles so more people have access to the flame.

I make candles so mothers, like me, can say yes to themselves, fueling their yes to their children.

I make candles because sacred space is not a luxury—it’s a necessity. And we all deserve a soft place to land at the end of the day.

I make candles to remind us that even in chaos, light lives within us. We just have to tend the flame.

And now, with plans to graduate as a certified Aromatherapist in December 2025, I’m deepening my ability to offer candles that don’t just smell good, but support healing, presence, and wholeness.

This business has been a sustainable source of income, freedom, and joy for my family—and I’m proud of that. But beyond the business, beyond the numbers, is something deeper: a calling. A prayer. A purpose.

This is what Sincerely Candle Company is all about. Helping you create a life you can feel deeply connected to—one flame at a time.
